🪺 A Reflection from My Years in Early Childhood
Over my many years as an early childhood educator, I have had the privilege of witnessing what happens when children are truly given the gift of time.
There were moments in our days where we would simply pause…
Step back…
And allow children to explore resources and experiences at their own pace.
We observed.
We listened.
We followed their lead.
From a simple idea — like mixing colours, building with blocks, or creating a story — children would develop rich theories about how the world works.
And our role?
To gently scaffold their thinking.
To ask meaningful questions.
To extend their ideas.
To support without taking over.
This is where the deepest learning lives.

The Shift We Are Seeing Today
In today’s early learning environments, there is often a growing pressure…
A pressure to document everything.
To capture every moment.
To meet standards, frameworks, and expectations.
Days can begin to feel rushed.
Moments of deep play are sometimes interrupted by the need to:
📸 Take photos
📝 Record observations
✔ Tick boxes
All in the hope of achieving and maintaining high assessment standards.
And while documentation has its place…
We must gently ask ourselves:
At what cost?
🌱 Why Slowing Down Matters
When we slow down and allow children uninterrupted time to play:
✨ Their focus deepens
✨ Their ideas become more complex
✨ Their confidence grows
✨ Their sense of self strengthens
They begin to trust their own thinking.
They become active participants in their learning, not passive followers.
💛 Our Philosophy at The Creative Nest
At The Creative Nest, we intentionally create space for this kind of learning.
We don’t rush children from one activity to the next.
We don’t interrupt meaningful play for the sake of structure.
Instead, we:
🌿 Honour children’s ideas
🎨 Provide rich, open-ended resources
🧠 Scaffold learning through connection and conversation
💛 Create a calm, nurturing environment where children feel safe to explore
Because we know…
When children are given the time to play,
they are also given the opportunity to think, feel, create, and grow.
✨ A Gentle Reminder for Parents
You don’t need expensive toys or structured activities at home.
Some of the richest learning comes from:
- Open-ended materials
- Time without interruption
- Following your child’s lead
- Simply being present
Play is not a break from learning.
Play is the learning.
🌸 In Closing
Let’s protect childhood.
Let’s honour the slow moments.
Let’s trust in the power of play.
Because within those moments of curiosity and imagination…
Is where the most meaningful learning takes flight 🪺✨
With warmth from the Nest,
Mrs Margarita 🪺✨
